Abstract

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are getting more popularity in the area of wireless and communication technology because they provide safety and precautionary measures to the drivers and the passengers on the roads while they are travelling. In this paper, VANETs are summarized by discussing their architecture, components, characteristics, security and challenges. Secondly, this paper also discusses the need of authentication and privacy in VANETs. Different authentication schemes are discussedwhich protects the vehicular network from malicious nodes and fake messages. Lastly the paper includes security issues in existing authentication schemes.
