Fluoride, the ionic form of the element fluorine, is ubiquitous in nature. The most common source of human exposure to fluoride is drinking water in which the ion may be present naturally or added in controlled amounts for the prevention of dental caries. Fluorides are measured by ion selective electrodes and colorimetric methods. Fluoride concentrations in water samples and appropriate aqueous standards are measured electrometrically using the ion-specific electrode.
